The Dutch startup Astrape Networks collects 7.9 million euros growing to make data centers suitable for the artificial intelligence (AI) era. The company from Eindhoven focuses on scaling up energy-efficient, AI optimized data center networks.

More efficiency of data centers is seen as an essential step for the further growth of AI and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. This also contributes to strengthening the digital sovereignty of Europe.

This spin-off from the Eindhoven University of Technology developed a patented technology for optical electronic circuits. Astrape tackles critical network bottlenecks with dynamic optical bypass solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into existing data center networks.

Congestion

Especially with the processing of AI-Workloads, many congestion currently occur in data traffic. Astrape offers a solution for congestion in data centers. Data centers can therefore process 50 percent more traffic, with fewer servers for the same ‘computational load’. This results in a twice as high utilization rate, an extension of the hop capacity from 0 to 2, and upscaling to networks with more than sixteen million GPUs/XPUs. Energy consumption is also reduced by 60 percent.

“The explosive growth of AI and HPC applications puts enormous pressure on data centers,” says Francesco Pessolano, CEO and co-founder of Astrape. “Our network solutions optimize server-to-server communication and load balancing, and thus drastically improve the efficiency and sustainability of data centers.”

The investment round offers Astrape the financial basis to realize its plans and to start the company founded well in 2022. De Ronde is led by Photonventures, Join Capital and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), with the participation of Shift Invest.
